Helping Neighbors Devastated by House Fire

Devastating House Fire of Family of six

On Labor Day 2016, family friends of one of our parishioners awoke in the wee hours of the morning to discover their house well engulfed in fire.  The six occupants of the house managed to escape in the nick of time–with literally nothing but the shirts on their backs. By the time the fire department arrived, the entire house was ablaze and all contents unsalvageable.  Imagine losing not only the jewelry handed down to you from your grandmother, your favorite furniture piece that you brought back from a memorable trip to Europe, pictures of your children and grandchildren, but also, you no longer even have in your possession a toothbrush or a pair of shoes. The Lord of Life congregation, always willing to help those with a need, stepped up and supported this family with cards of heart-felt messages and monetary donations, as well as lots and lots of on-going prayer.  The process of rebuilding took a lot of time for this family, at times testing strength, endurance, character and faith.  Our church quilting group, Peace by Piece Quilters, crafted a warm and cozy flannel quilt for them to help endure the cold winter months in the drafty rented trailer they called home for a year.  Now, as the new house nears completion, we celebrate with them! Since the family lost all of their treasured recipes in the fire, we are assembling a booklet of favorite recipes from our parishioners to help the family once again enjoy tasty meals with friends and family and perhaps some will become their new favorites!  Individual LOL members have also purchased Home Depot and Wal-Mart gift cards for them to help offset the myriad of “little” purchases the family will have to make in order to now turn this new house into a home.
